“The fire started after a high-tension wire fell on the train when the train was returning from New Delhi’s Hazrat Nizamuddin Station. The fire was detected in the B6 coach of train No. 22416, a fully air-conditioned Express, at 11:50 am and later it was spread to the adjoining B7 coach. It then quickly spread, engulfing the door and windows of the neighbouring coaches,” North Central Railway’s (NCR) Chief Public Relations Officer Gaurav Krishna Bansal said.
“The train guard stopped the train and shifted the passengers in the affected coaches to other coaches. The burning coaches of the train were then separated from the train, before it proceeded to Gwalior station,” Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jhansi, Vipin Kumar Singh said.
Some passengers pulled the emergency chain to stop the train and got down, he said, adding that fire tenders later doused the blaze.
Director of Publicity, Railway Board, Ved Prakash said, “No injuries have been reported so far. Three fire tenders helped douse the flames.”
According to District Superintendent of Police Navneet Bhasin, two conditioned coaches were damaged in the fire. 37 deputy collectors were on board the train but they were not hurt in the mishap.
Initially it was heard that the train was a Rajdhani Express. However, later, it was confirmed that the train was AP Express.
