India’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in an address to the nation, “ Our Country India’s lockdown has been extended until May 3.” The new lockdown announcement comes on what was to be the last day of the initial lockdown, which started on 25th March. The 3 weeks lockdown of the nation of 1.3 billion people, which started on 25th March midnight, was scheduled to end on Tuesday midnight.

PM Modi said that the lockdown, as well as other social distancing measures, have benefited our country India despite the economic costs incurred. India needs to curb the spread of the Corona virus and take stricter measures to prevent new covid-19 cases from emerging.

Modi thanked the Indian people for their support in the fight against the coronavirus and said, “I salute all you citizens.” PM Modi suggested that the rules could tighten further over the next 1 week, but he did not reveal more details. The government would issue guidelines soon. PM further said that the lockdown had been made thinking of our poor and migrant workers, the farmers and daily-wage workers.

Experts are fearing that lockdown may affect farming, which employs more than half of India’s workforce.

Several states, including Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Odisha and Telangana which has the highest number of coronavirus cases,  have already announced lockdown extensions.
