Nirbhaya rape case: The Supreme Court is scheduled to pronounce its verdict today on the review pleas of three out of four convicts against death penalty in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case. The Bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices R Banumati and Ashok Bhushan is expected to deliver its judgment on the pleas of Mukesh (29), Pawan Gupta (22) and Vinay Sharma (23).
The fourth death row convict, Akshay Kumar Singh (31), has not filed a review petition against the apex court’s 5th May, 2017 judgment. Advocate AP Singh, representing Akshay Kumar Singh, said, “Akshay Kumar Singh has not filed a review petition yet. We will be filing it.” In the 2017 verdict, the Supreme Court had upheld the capital punishment awarded to the rapists by the Delhi High Court and the trial court.
The Supreme Court will today decide whether the four men sentenced to death for raping and torturing a 23 years old paramedic student on 16th December, 2012, on a moving bus in Delhi, triggering nationwide protests, deserve mercy. The top court will announce its verdict today on Monday.
The 23-year-old medical student was gang-raped on the intervening night of 16th December, 2012 inside a running bus in south Delhi by six persons and severely assaulted before being thrown out on the road. Iron rods were inserted in the private parts of the victim and she was thrown naked in cold along with her male friend. One of the accused, the bus driver Ram Singh, had allegedly committed suicide in Tihar Jail. The youngest accused, just days short of 18 when he committed the crime, was sent to a juvenile home and he was released from a reformation home after serving a three-year term. The case clearly comes within the category of ‘rarest of rare case’.
